Own a piece of South African history with this antique Voortrekker Monument ceramic tureen. Made in the middle of the 20th Century (1938) as a commemorative gift to celebrate the ‘Groot Trek‘ of the Afrikaans farmers (boere) across South Africa from the Southern Peninsula to establish a new settlement in the Northern Transvaal. It is quite an exceptional and beautiful piece – the lid depicts illustrations of the various significant mountain peaks and ranges in South Africa and on the underside the corresponding names of those geological features is inscribed. The remaining artistry is just as beautiful – depicting the Voortrekker Monument itself and scenes from the Groot Trek such as ossewa (oxen wagons) and the nature they travelled through in terracotta ink on cream coloured ceramic.
This rare tureen adds a touch of heritage and elegance to any dining setting or display cabinet. Ideal for collectors of Africana or those seeking a conversation-starting centerpiece. This cream and orange toned tureen offers a glimpse into a bygone era, showcasing the craftsmanship of the past. Display it proudly as a standalone piece or use it to serve dishes with a touch of historical flair.
This antique tureen is crafted from ceramic and measures 250mm in width and 200mm in height. Please note: it has a hairline crack (adding to its antique charm) and is priced accordingly.
